Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that can be performed by company First Aiders at the work place to manually preserve the brain function in a person suffering cardiac arrest.
Other measures then are taken to restore the patient's blood circulation and breathing. CPR involves compressing the patient's chest in an effort to manually pump blood through the heart. In addition, the First Aider may provide breaths by either exhaling into the patient's mouth or by using a device that pushes air into the subject's lungs.
CPR alone is unlikely to restart the heart; its main purpose is to restore partial flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart. The objective is to delay tissue death and to extend the brief window of opportunity for a successful resuscitation without permanent brain damage.
First aid training providers such as Alsco (www.alscotraining.com.au) are at the forefront of providing Australian companies with fully-compliant CPR training courses.
The Alsco CPR course – provided as part of Alsco’s comprehensive managed first aid training portfolio - provides First Aiders with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain breathing and circulation in an adult, child or infant following cardiac arrest.
Course content is based on Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines 2010 and includes:
The prerequisite for this two-hour course is current CPR Statement of Attainment (gained within the previous 12 months). The current Industry standard is for this course to be updated every 12 months.
